he opening day of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals features the four players from Group B battling it out with each other in the first wave of round robin matches at the $5,070,000 season-ending tournament.

First up is No. 4 seed Robin Soderling against No. 5 seed Andy Murray. One week ago, Murray was ranked No. 4 and Soderling No. 5; but by winning his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Paris, the Swede rose to a career-high No. 4, pushing the Scot to No. 5. The pair's head-to-head series is tied, 2-2, but Soderling has won their past two meetings in straight sets (in Memphis in February 2006 and in March this year at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells). Both were in the quarter-finals.

Second up is No. 2 seed and four-time year-end finale champion Roger Federer against No. 7 seed David Ferrer, a head-to-head the Swiss dominates, 10-0. However, the Spaniard seems to be closing in on him slightly. After losing their first six meetings in straight sets, Ferrer has taken a set off of Federer in three of their past four meetings. Federer last’s year-end title came in Shanghai in 2007 as he defeated Ferrer 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. And since returning to hard courts after Wimbledon, Federer is a solid 29-4 while Ferrer is 22-9.

The doubles competition also kicks off with the first two matches. First up are top seeds and World No. 1 Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan against No. 7 seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, a match-up that features winners of three of this year's four Grand Slams tournaments. The Bryans captured the Australian Open and US Open titles this year and they are the defending champions here. They are going for their fourth year-end title. Melzer and Petzschner, who earned their first Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon, are making their first appearance here. The Bryans won the previous meeting in the third round at the Australian Open in January. Second up are the other two teams in Group A, as No. 3 seeds Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes and No. 6 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski. Their head-to-head series is tied, 2-2.
